Get Proper Spacing with the Right Wedge Lofts

Every year, golf manufacturers are rolling out the latest line of irons with advanced, state-of-the-art technology for improved lofts. Of course, we are picking up a wide range of short irons so we have the perfect collection in our bags. Yet yardage gaps play an important role on the types of clubs we purchase, and our wedge lofts may be to blame for our inconsistent distance shots on the golf course.

Proper Spacing Desired for the Right Yardage Gaps

Your clubs should not all offer the same yardage. You want to have yardage gaps between your wedges and your short irons so you have a range of distances that can help you get the ball closer to the hole with less swings. To create more distance consistency, you have to pay attention to the wedges that you already own and what wedges you should have to have the best yardage gaps. Some basic advice to take note about when getting the right wedges:

Figure out Your Pitching Wedge Loft

With your pitching wedge, you want to have it match your set and then have several more wedges along with your gap wedge to have the proper spacing. So if you know your pitching wedge loft is 45 degrees, you will want to have about two to three more wedges in your bag. Each one should have a loft that has a 4-degree to 5-degree loft distance between the next wedge. So along with the 45-degree pitching wedge, you will probably have a 50-degree gap wedge, a 54-degree sand wedge and a 58-degree lob wedge.

Take into Account the Number of Clubs in Your Bag

You can legally carry up to 14 clubs in your bag that will be used throughout your game. So if you have 10 clubs in your bag, which includes your putter and your 9-iron, you can have four more that are wedges. This tactic will allow you to have all the clubs you could possibly need in your bag and the wedge angles that can fill in so you can increase your distance consistency.

Consider Getting a Wedge Fitting

If you are getting fitted for your irons by a professional fitter, then you should also get a wedge fitting in at the same time. This method will allow you to get the right wedges for the yardage gaps since you will already know what irons are best for your skills. Then you can hit the course with a full set of clubs that are just right for your game play. You will also see more productive short shots that will get your ball closer to the hole.
